La galerie du Barbican présente jusqu’au 12 aout une grande exposition sur l’école du Bauhaus. Cette exposition raconte l’histoire de ce mouvement artistique qui marqua aussi bien le design, que l’architecture ou l’art contemporain.

Avec près de 400 œuvres exposées, Bauhaus : Art as Life présente peintures, sculptures, tissus, dessins, meubles, architecture, films, photographies et objets qui ont marqué l’école du Bauhaus.

Le Bauhaus fut fondé par Walter Gropius à Weimar en Allemagne en 1919, juste après la première guerre mondiale. Cette école des arts et métiers devenue un mouvement artistique révolutionna l’architecture moderne mais aussi les arts plastiques. Fermée en 1933 par la Nazis alors arrivés au pouvoir en Allemagne, nombreux de ses participants s’exilèrent alors vers les Etats Unis ou la France afin d’échapper au national socialisme, peu enclin aux idées novatrices du Bauhaus.

Parmi les artistes d’avant-garde appartenant au mouvement du Bauhaus, on compte entre autres Johannes Itten, Vassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy ou encore Marcel Breuer.

L’exposition du Barbican présente le Bauhaus par ordre chronologique, des années passées  à Weimar, celles de Dassau en 1925 puis les dernières années à Berlin, avant sa fermeture définitive.

Parmi les œuvres marquantes du Bauhaus exposées ici, on retrouve les photographies de Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, les meubles de Breuer, les costumes de scène des pièces d’Oskar Schlemmer.

Informations : Entrée £10 par personne. Galerie ouverte tous les jours de 11h à 20h, sauf le mercredi 18h.
